These flightless animals need stable sea ice on which to breed and this icy platform must last from April, when the birds arrive, until December, when they chicks fledge. To survive in the severely frigid climate , Emperor penguins are equipped with four layers of scales-like feathers to protect them and provide a waterproof coat. At sea , this penguins glide through the water with a great speed and agility , their aerodynamic bodies makes them excellent swimmers reaching a speed of 7 kmh . Emperors are the largest of all penguins .
